Secretary general of the Social-Democratic Party (PSD) from Romania, Titus Corlatean, is in Chisinau to back Basarabian Tudor Pantiru in his effort to win a seat of Romanian parliamentarian. “The political battle, extremely difficult and important, to follow to promote Moldova in Europe is the reason why I'm in Chisinau to support the candidacy of Mr. Pantiru,” Titus Corlatean said Wednesday, November 19, at a joint news conference with Tudor Pantiru in the quarters of Info-Prim Neo News Agency. “We'll need a Basarabian Romanian with very much experience, a grownup man knowing to promote important legislative drafts, not marred by the Chisinau political battle,” Titus Corlatean said. “I would like to see the Basarabians divided by political doctrines: it's not in our interest. I have all the respect for my opponents, Nicolae Dabija and Eugen Tomac. Regardless of the results, I will respect the voters' choice,” Tudor Pantiru said. “The vote is uninominal, do not speculate with party doctrines. Ask the nominees: what they can do, have done and will be able to do,” added the candidate running for the Alliance PSD-Conservative Party from Romania. On Wednesday afternoon, Tudor Pantiru officially launched his campaign for the parliamentary elections from Romania to take place on November 30. Speaking on the relations between Chisinau and Brussels, Titus Corlatean has been asked whether they understand in Brussels that a new Moldova-EU cooperation accord, signed before the spring elections in Moldova, may be used in the Communists' electoral interest. Europarliamentarian Titus Corlatean has answered the signing is not going to take place before the poll. “I have been one of the supporters of concluding a cooperation accord with Moldova namely to attract Moldova toward Europe's democratic space. But, if there is no concrete legislative, institutional, democratic progress, nobody shall expect for the negotiation mandate to be signed, for the negotiations to start and for the accord to be signed. This is not going to happen before the election because it will be an oxygen pillow given to the Communist power in Chisinau given without any merit,” said the first deputy chairman of the legal committee of the European Parliament. Referring to granting visas and Romanian citizenship to Basarabians, Titus Corlatean has stressed that Romania should have complied with certain Community requirements before joining the EU, but is has now another statute. He brought forward the examples of Greece and Hungary which managed to negotiate, from Brussels, special statutes fort their nationals living abroad. For the first time, after the elections of November 30, four deputies and two senators elected by the Romanians living abroad will be in the Romanian Parliament.
