MEP suggests Moldova should sign political part of Association Agreement first

Moldova may do as Ukraine and sign the political part of the Association Agreement with the EU first and then the economic part. The suggestion was formulated by MEP Monica Macovei, IPN reports.

“Currently, this is the only solution that can ensure stability,” Monica Macovei said in the opening of the 18th meeting of the EU-Moldova Parliamentary Cooperation Committee held in Chisinau.

Monica Macovei, who is the co-chairwoman of the committee on behalf of the EU, said the pressure exerted by Russia on Moldova will increase, with some voices asserting that Moldova is the next victim of the Kremlin.

Co-chairman on behalf of Moldova Ion Hadarca said there are concerns that Russia may intensify its military maneuvers in the Transnistrian region. “In this connection, we call on the European Parliament and the Council of Europe to permanently monitor the state of security and the territorial integrity of Moldova,” he said.

He also said that 2014 is a crucial year for Moldova as there will be analyzed the results of the joint efforts made over the last four years for aligning more closely with the EU. “We fulfilled the commitments concerning the implementation of legislative, structural and institutional reforms. They refer to public order, migration, justice and the fight against corruption,” stated the MP.

The meeting of the EU-Moldova Parliamentary Cooperation Committee is taking place in Chisinau on March 25 – 26.
