MEP suggests making substantial investments in Moldova's economy and in securing its borders

Romanian MEP Ioan Enciu said the European Union should make substantial investments in Moldova's economy and in securing its borders. He expressed his position during a plenary sitting of the European Parliament in Strasbourg on Thursday, November 26. “I'm convinced that a substantial investment in the economy of this country and in modernizing its migration and border control capacity and the offering of clear accession prospects will have beneficial results on the given aspects and will serve as a model for other states that are in the immediate vicinity of the EU,” Ioan Enciu said. The MEP made the given statements in the context of the coming into force of the Lisbon Treaty in the near future and the adoption of an ambitious programs in the areas of justice and internal affairs, such as the Stockholm Program, which will have a positive impact on the European citizens at the level of freedom and security. He warned about the dangers posed by the illegal migration that is expected to rise during the coming years and will affect the eastern border of the European Union. “I think we should create closer cooperation instruments with the countries bordering the EU, which are more vulnerable from economic viewpoint and have reduced capacities for fighting illegal migration, trafficking in drugs and human beings, organized crime,” he said, adding that Moldova does not have full control over its territory, but strongly wants to become part of the EU. Romanian MEP Ioan Enciu is a member of the S&D Group in the European Parliament.
