MEP claims Romanian Government has secret plan to people counties inhabited by Hungarians with Moldovans
Romanian MEP László Tőkés says that the Government of Romania has a secret plan to populate the counties inhabited by Hungarians with Moldovans that hold Romanian nationality, Info-Prim Neo reports.
In a communiqué issued on April 27, Tőkés says that the head of the Covasna County Council Sandor Tamas was contacted by a Moldovan citizen through the agency of the Ministry of Administration and Interior and asked to provide the persons that want to be repatriated with information about “the Romanian Government’s program on the population of Harghita and Covasna counties with Moldovans.” “It seems that there is a secret governmental plan aimed at peopling the areas inhabited by Hungarians, mainly Szecklers, with Moldovans that hold Romanian nationality,” Tőkés said.
The parliamentarian stressed that the modification of the ethnic proportions by involving the state runs counter to the international obligations assumed by Romania. He also said that the Romanian governmental policy “with hidden territorial claims” could not only further strain the Moldovan-Romanian relations, but create tension inside the Szecklers while trying to solve this problem by modifying the ethnic proportions forcedly and artificially.
László Tőkés, who is also the president of the National Council of the Hungarians of Transylvania, says that the fact that a number of Romanian politicians try to use Moldovan young people’s protests for freedom to legalize 'territorial claims” is regrettable and worrisome. Tőkés accused especially his colleagues from the European Parliament - the Social-Democrats Adrian Severin and Victor Bostinaru. According to the representative of the Hungarian community, late in March the two distributed to MEPs invitations to a so-called historical conference accompanied by maps where Moldova is annexed to Romania. “Definitely, the use of a map showing Moldova’s annexation to Romania in the European Parliament will not help normalize the Romanian-Moldovan relations,” Tőkés said.
MEP László Tőkés is the top candidate of the Democratic Union of Hungarians in Romania at the elections for the European Parliament. Earlier, the president of the Union Marko Bela rejected the idea of granting Romanian nationality to one million Moldovans, saying that this is not a solution that can improve the relations between Romania and Moldova. In a report presented at the Union’s Congress on Saturday, he says that the facilitated granting of Romanian nationality to Moldovans remains a problematic issue.
The Government of Romania decided to simplify the procedures for regaining and granting Romanian nationality for the former Romanian citizens and their descendents up to the third degree by amending the Romanian nationality law of 1991 following a request made by President Traian Basescu.
