“I hope the opposition will be united around only one candidate – a powerful candidate who is a leader, who has a view,” said Lithuanian MEP of the Renew Europe Group Petras Austrevicius. According to him, the candidates of the opposition should focus on a new ambition: new social dynamics and economic development of the Republic of Moldova, IPN reports.
In an interview for RFE/RL’s Moldovan Service, Petras Austrevicius said that he misses those moments under the governance of Maia Sandu, when it seemed that Moldova’s ambition is at its height and that ambition placed Moldova on another road, with another destiny. Then the authorities fought corruption, distanced themselves from persons involved in dubious stories.
“This is something that should be continued during the years to come. Society needs this. The people want to enjoy freedom, but also opportunities. Moldova does not have oil and gas like my country, but the comparisons made between Moldova and Lithuania make sense. We both started from the status of a Soviet wagon. We then detached ourselves swiftly from the Soviet train and joined the European one that set off speedily. Thirty years have passed since then and we are now a different country,” stated the MEP.
“I think the country should be managed by other leaders, not only by some who speak about the neutrality of the Republic of Moldova. No one will take away Moldova’s neutrality. It is the exclusive decision of the country. Not this should be the main idea that unites society. It does not go to sovereignty. I speak about something else. Where is the ambition of the people who look at the managers and say: Yes, we can! I do not see this ambition”.
