Mentally ill residents of boarding schools receive inadequate treatment
People with mental deficiencies who live specialized boarding schools in Moldova do not receive adequate medical treatment. According to the Ministry of Labor, Social Protection and Family, 5.65 lei per day are allocated for the medical needs of these people, money which is mostly spent on first-aid medications or drugs against some light recurring illnesses, reports Info-Prim Neo.
Human Rights Institute director Vanu Jereghi says that the people living in these institutions should undergo medical examination every 6 months by at least 3 doctors specialized in psychiatric illnesses. In reality, however, the patients are examined once a year by only one doctor.
Vanu Jereghi adds that 50% of the beneficiaries of residential institutions for children with mental deficiencies are over 18 years of age. According to him, there are cases when the beneficiaries are held in institutions and exploited for certain services they are capable of providing.
Each month 3,000 lei are allocated per one mentally ill person who resides in specialized establishments. The total number of places is such institutions is 1,665.
