The men are increasingly exposed to the risk of being trafficked for labor exploitation abroad, while among women this phenomenon has decreased. The male victims are also included in criminal activities and trafficking in drugs. Russia and Ukraine are the countries that witness the largest number of cases of human trafficking. The information was presented in a conference held in Chisinau on the occasion of the launch of the nationwide information campaign “Week of fight against trafficking in human beings” that will take place during October 18-24, IPN reports.
Minister of the Interior Alexandru Jizdan said the incomes earned by offenders as a result of human trafficking rank third after the incomes gained from trafficking in drugs and armament. “Trafficking in human beings is a complex and flexible phenomenon and its forms can undergo changes depending on internal and external factors. In the course of this year, this phenomenon saw a downward trend compared with 2015 and 2014. Thus, 94 offenses have been discovered this year, as opposed to 125 and, respectively, 126 cases in the previous periods. The number of cases of trafficking in children decreased by 25%. This year saw a new trend related to the exploitation of victims of trafficking in drugs on the territory of Russia. There were identified 18 male victims aged between 21 and 35,” he stated.
Deputy Minister of Labor, Social Protection and Family Viorica Dumbraveanu said trafficking in human beings is an international problem, regardless of its form of manifestation, and does not have well delimited borders. The Ministry of Labor focuses on the prevention of this phenomenon and on the protection of the victims and potential victims. “We have assistance centers for victims in Chisinau and in districts. The information campaigns are not enough for combating this phenomenon, but we will stage a number of focused activities in schools and lyceums within this week,” stated Viorica Dumbraveanu.
The activities during this week will include the presentation of the strategic analysis report “Monitoring of the situation of human trafficking – analysis of the criminal state and dynamics for 2015”, roundtable meeting for members of the multidisciplinary teams, public lectures with students of law faculties, etc.
