A Memorial to honour Moldovan soldiers killed in Afghanistan war will be inaugurated on Sunday, May 20, in Chisinau. The “In Sacred Remembrance of the Sons of the Nation” Memorial is located on Miron Costin Bd. in Rascani district of the capital. The authors of the memorial are sculptor Boris Dubrovin and architect Vasile Eremciuc. The complex represents four pillars which support a massive crown of thorns. The first element of the complex – “Mama indurerata” (The Grieving Mother) – was erected in 2004, while the construction of the second one - “Miscarea spre eternitate” (Closer to Eternity), started in 2005. According to Ion Deremji, interim head of the Municipal Construction Division, the project of the memorial complex was drawn up by Urban Proiect Institute and the general contractor was Monolit JSC. The Chisinau City Hall got the task to pave those 10,000 sq. m of the complex, to plant flowers and install public lights. A distinct feature of the complex is supposed to be the beautiful fountains with nocturnal illumination. The Municipal Council has allotted so far MDL 3 mln for erecting the memorial. 12,500 Moldovan citizens participated in the war in Afghanistan, 300 of whom died on the battlefield.
