An official working at the Citizenship Granting Commission (reporting to the President) and a civilian middleman were arrested Friday on influence peddling charges.
According to the National Anticorruption Center (CNA), the suspects are believed to have facilitated the naturalization of a foreigner for a 2,500 euros bribe. Detectives observed and documented both the handing of the bribe from the applicant to the intermediary and from the intermediary to the official, after which the arrests followed.
The suspects will now spend at least 72 hours in the CNA’s remand center.
The investigation will continue to establish all the circumstances of the case. The President’s Office is cooperating with the CNA and prosecutors to help identify any other potential suspects.
