Medvedev bid Voronin farewell
Russian president Dmitri Medvedev said goodbye to his Moldovan counterpart Vladimir Voronin, who will have to leave his post shortly, says the Russian publication Kommersant, quoted by Info-Prim Neo.
The initiative to have a meeting in Sochi on August 21 belonged to the official Chisinau. Voronin tried not to look like ‘a lame duck’ and wanted to assure that he still keeps the situation in the country under control, the publication says on its website.
“In the past, Voronin returned home with golden promises – in March Russia donated 50 tonnes of diesel oil to Moldova, while in June promised a $500 million loan – but now he has nothing to boast about,” Kommersant says.
The traditional news conference of the heads of state was not held, while the communiqué issued by the Kremlin contained only a general sentence.
The worst news for Voronin was that Dmitri Medvedev suggested that Moscow not only accepted the fact that Voronin will lose the absolute power in Moldova, but also that it is ready to improve the relations with the president’s opponents from the democratic coalition.
Sources in the Kremlin said that the Democratic parties that entered the Parliament do not irritate Moscow. “For us, it is important that their programs envision cooperation with Russia, even if it is not regarded as one of the major trading partners.”
According to Kommersant, Moldova needs the Russian loan very much as the Communist government will leave their adversaries a budget deficit of about 6 billion lei or $500 million. The created financial situation will be favorable to the Communists, who said they are ready to act as a tough Opposition. If Russia offers the promised loan, it will show its willingness to cooperate with the new Moldovan government.
