A lot of medical equipment to support the fight against COVID-19 to the value of over €685,000 was delivered to the Republic of Moldova with the support of the European Union and the World Health Organization. The 300 oxygen concentrators, 600 pulse oximeters and five lung ventilators will help save lives at the national hospitals, IPN reports.
The assistance forms part of the EU’s Solidary for Health Initiative - a two-year project implemented with the WHO to address the COVID-19 pandemic and build a resilient health sector in the Eastern Partnership. The equipment will be distributed by the Ministry of Health, Labor and Social Protection according to the needs of the medical institutions.
Also today, the Ministry of Health received a donation of 600 pulse oximeters from the Federal Government of Germany, which will go to primary medical assistance institutions.
“The pandemic situation at the national level is alarming. The number of persons who need hospitalization continues to rise and the capacities of hospitals need to be strengthened. Owing to the assistance of the European Union and the WHO, the national health system can provide high-quality assistance to patients. We highly appreciate the solidarity and permanent support of the donors and development partners of the Republic of Moldova,” stated sectary of state at the Ministry of Health Tatiana Zatyk.
“The European Union and its Member States are near the citizens of the Republic of Moldova in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic. The equipment delivered today is very necessary when the number of infections goes up and the patients urgently need this support that can save lives. The offered equipment is supplemented by a donation made by Germany. Acting together as Team Europe and in partnership with the WHO, we will continue to offer the assistance needed by the health system of the Republic of Moldova, within the EU’s Solidary for Health Initiative,” said the Head of the EU Delegation to Moldova Peter Michalko, being quoted in a press release.
WHO Representative to Moldova Igor Pokanevych said the World Health Organization continues to be near the frontline health workers in the fight against COVID-19. The additional lot of essential medical equipment is of crucial importance as it is designed to save lives by helping to treat more patients.
