On the occasion of Europe’s Stand Up For Journalism Day, representatives of mass-media institutions from Moldova organised a meeting in front of the Parliament building on Monday, November 5. The participants adopted a Resolution addressing the media problems of national importance. The event was organised by the Journalists Union of Moldova (UJM). According to the UJM Chairman Valeriu Saharneanu, Moldova is a country with a partly free press, a fact which is confirmed by international organisations’ reports in the domain. However there are range of unsolved problems like the limited access to information, low wages and others. “UJM joined the Romanian MediaSind Labour Union. Recently the organisation regained its membership in the European Federation of Journalists. Together with our partners we joined the battle for journalists’ rights. No positive change is possible without the involvement, attention and change of the political class. This Resolution is the summary of al the problems which are to be solved and which we had repeatedly tried to warn the government of”, Valeriu Saharneanu said. Moldova can not develop a democratic society that would respect the interests of all its citizens if it lacks free press and independent journalism which would be promoted and protected by law and the behaviour of a responsible political class, the Resolution states. The problems identified in the Resolution include the lack of a national strategy on the economic support of the press, political control and pressure, illegal privatisation of public media, limitation of the journalists’ right to information. MPs Vladimir Filat and Dumitru Braghis also joined the meeting in solidarity with the journalists. “It is natural that I am here with the journalists. I’m sure that they are the ones to make the positive change”, Vladimir Filat mentioned. “There is political will for reform projects in the domain of mass-media. Unfortunately, this wish is not supported by the parliamentary majority, which kills all the initiatives in this direction”, stated Dumitru Braghis, pleading for unity of the journalists. The Journalists Union of Moldova is part of the European Federation of Journalists which designated November 5 as Europe’s Stand Up for Journalism Day.
