Media outlets to protest against intimidation of journalists after elections
The media organizations of Moldova will stage a protest in the square of the National Opera House in Chisinau on May 3, starting at 12.00. They will protest against the steps aimed at intimidating the journalists and undermining the media outlets taken by the Moldovan Communist authorities after the April 5 legislative elections, Info-Prim Neo reports, quoting a communiqué from the organizers.
The protest is held on the occasion of the World Press Freedom Day marked by the international journalist community on May 3.
“The aim of the event is to sensitize the population and international community to the extremely dangerous environment in which the journalists work in Moldova, to the violation of the right to information and the freedom of expression and the acts of violence against the journalists and pressure exerted by the authorities on the media institutions and nongovernmental organizations that are not loyal to the power,” the organizations say.
The organizers of the protest – the Journalists Union of Moldova, the Independent Press Association, the Association of Electronic Press, and the Independent Journalism Center – call on the journalists, representatives of the civil society and ordinary people to make common cause and actively participate in the event in order to support the efforts to build a truly democratic state in Moldova.
