Media organizations condemn peacekeeping forces’ actions against journalists

Media nongovernmental organizations condemn the actions taken by soldiers forming part of the peacekeeping forces against journalists Viorica Tătaru and Andrei Captarenco. By a statement addressed to the responsible bodies, the NGOs warn about the inadmissibility of tolerating such serious violations, IPN reports.

According to Viorica Tătaru, on July 21, while being near Molovata Nouă to collect facts for an article concerning war veterans, the journalist because the victim of intimidations and violence used by a soldier of the troops deployed at the security posts on the Nistru. He hit her and took away her cellphone, removing multiple files from this.

Later, when the journalist and her colleague got onto the ferryboat to cross the Nistru River, three peacekeepers stopped the ferry in order to arrest the two. As they refused to obey the illegal order of armed soldiers, the journalists and other passengers had to stay on the ferry for about an hour, until a police team came.

The NGOs warn the legitimate authorities of the state about the gravity of the encroachments upon the nationally and internationally guaranteed human rights and freedoms by violating the right to bodily integrity, individual liberty and security and the special rights of journalists.

The statement was signed by the Independent Journalism Center, the Association of Independent Press, the Journalistic Investigations Center, the Association of Tele-Journalists, the Committee for the Freedom of the Press, the Association of Environmental Journalists and Ecological Tourism, and the Electronic Press Association.
