Media NGOs protest against limitation of people’s access to information of public importance

Seven media nongovernmental organisations express their disagreements over the way in which the journalists representing Romanian media institutions that wanted to participate in the summing up new conference held by the President Vladimir Voronin on December 18 were treated. In a press release cited by Info-Prim Neo, the signatory NGOs describe the perpetuation of such a practice as limitation of the people’s access to information of public importance, which runs counter to the democratic principles and commitments assumed by Moldova in the European integration process. The authors of the communiqué consider that the lack of accreditation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration invoked is a formal explanation as a journalist holding such authorisation was also denied access to the conference. The reasons for the presidential press service’s refusal are open to doubt as representatives of other foreign media institutions were admitted to the conference. The signatories remind that this is not the first case that the journalists invited to take part in the events organised by the presidential office are selected according to unfair and non-transparent principles. The presidential institution also used discriminatory and biased criteria when accrediting local journalists. Recently, the presidential press service hindered journalists from Balti town from participating in a meeting attended by President Vladimir Voronin. Unfortunately, this vicious behaviour is copied by other local and central public institutions At the news conference, Voronin said that Moldova lags behinds in a number of areas, including as regards the freedom of mass media. Indisputably, the discriminatory attitude towards the journalists invited to such events does not contribute to the elimination of the given drawback, concludes the declaration signed by the Electronic Press Association, the Independent Journalism Centre, the Association of Independent Press, the Centre Acces-Info, the Committee for Freedom of the Media, the Union of Journalists of Moldova, the Journalistic Investigations Centre.
