Media NGO wants press council

The idea of setting up a press council to regulate possible litigations between media outlets and information consumers is promoted at public debates organized by the Independent Press Association (IPA) in Balti, Orhei, Comrat and Chisinau, Info-Prim Neo reports. “The press council could be set up by the example of other countries from Europe where such institutions work to solve the litigations appearing among mass-media and information consumers,” said IPA's executive manager Petru Macovei, after the debates in Balti, Thursday, May 28. According to Macovei, the debate attendees had different opinions. Generally speaking, the participants backed the necessity to organize a viable and efficient self-regulating mechanism. After the April 7 events it turned clear that certain outlets forgot the responsibility they have: to provide fair and equidistant information, the IPA executive said. The debates are held within a project financed by the Eurasia Foundation in Moldova.
