Meat and egg prices to remain high until year's end

Meat and eggs will have increased prices until the end of the year. The price growth started as early as June, when a price increase on all animal origin products, stated economic analyst Viorel Chivriga for Info-Prim Neo. This summer’s drought left its mark on product prices. According to the expert, Moldovan agricultural enterprises started incurring losses as early as June, and their product prices increased by 18% on average. The most sizeable increase was on pork, of 29.7%, beef prices went up by 13%, poultry meat by 11%. Eggs and milk prices increased by 21%, and 5.23% respectively. Some agricultural enterprises were left without fodder. Some households were in the same situation. Thus, farmers were forced to sacrifice their animals. “This is the reason behind the rapid price growth. By the end of the year the supply will have fallen, thus being unable to satisfy local demand. Producers are already at a loss, and now they’re also losing customers, who are forced to pay the money they don’t have”, said Viorel Chivriga. Vitalie Ciobanu, head of the Market Policies Division within the Livestock Sector of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry, stated the prices for livestock products have grown after the prices for concentrated fodder, including wheat, corn, barley, rye, and others, have grown.
