Measures to ensure rights of persons with disabilities are observed

The Government approved a set of indicators for monitoring the implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, IPN reports.

The efficiency of measures taken to ensure the observance of the rights of persons with disabilities will be monitored through three categories of specific indicators: structure, progress and result.

Among the approved indicators is the public authorities’ commitment to work out the normative framework needed to fight discrimination against persons with special needs and to ensure their access to public services of a high quality and special services, depending on the needs of the person. The persons with disabilities will be supported to become actively involved in the decision-making process, in education, health and culture and to take part in sports and recreational activities.

Moldova ratified the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities on July 9, 2010, pledging to adjust the national legislation to the principles described in the document.

In Moldova, there are over 184,000 officially registered persons with disabilities, which is 5.2% of the population. Of these, more than 13,000 are children.
