The mayoral runoffs in Chisinau could be a new quake for the system. If Ion Ceban wins, the system will somehow survive despite the fissure that occurred in its basis. If Andrei Nastase emerges victorious, and this has real chances of winning, things for the system will become very dangerous. Such opinions were stated in the talk show “Important” on TVC21 channel, IPN reports.
“It is now hard to anticipate how the system will react to what is going on,” said political commentator Anatol Taranu. According to him, if the voter turnout in the runoffs is lower than 45%, the pro-European forces will lose. This will happen if no techniques and technologies to mobilize the pro-European voters are applied. “For the purpose, the pro-European voters should reach an agreement, as they did for the presidential runoff of 2016,” stated the commentator.
Civic activist Stefan Gligor said that if Ion Ceban wins the mayoralty, all the promises and allusions made by the Democratic Party at foreign level and in the discussions with the development partners will turn out to be empty words. “They hoped a lot to propel Silvia Radu to the runoffs and demonstratively, with excess of zeal, to win the mayoralty from the Socialists, showing their efficiency and power of decision in this country,” he stated, adding that the situation for the Democratic Party is now difficult and the party is in an absolutely ridiculous position.
The June 3 mayoral runoff vote in Chisinau will involve the Party of Socialists’ candidate Ion Ceban and the candidate of the Party “Platform Dignity and Truth” Andrei Nastase.
