Mayor who is under house arrest can continue work, jurists

Ilan Shor will remain mayor of Orheiului until his term in office expires, while the fact that he is accused and is under house arrest does not limit his duties, Shor’s jurists said following rumors that this can be dismissed from post for the reason that he hasn’t worked for four months, IPN reports.

According to the jurists, the mayor of Orhei has the legal right to keep his job. The legal provisions stipulating that a mayor loses his job if this does not work for four months do not apply to Ilan Shor. Even if he is under house arrest, Ilan Shor continues to fulfill his duties of mayor.

The jurists also said that a Constitution Court judgment provides that the term in office of a mayor who stands trial does not end if the criminal case is not related to his duties of mayor.

Ilan Shor is accused of swindle and money laundering in a case concerning the robbing of Banca de Economii (Savings Bank).
