After the PAS councilors demanded to annul the cleanup tax in the municipality of Chisinau, mayor Ion Ceban asked that this tax should be annulled all over the country. Together with unaffiliated MP Gaik Vartanean, the mayor signed a legislative proposal to this effect, IPN reports.

“Those who did nothing in the country, make new empty promises as to the things they intend to do in the capital city. They cheaply manipulate different subjects,” Ion Ceban said on Monday. According to him, the cleanup tax is one of these subjects.

The mayor noted that since the Party of Action and Solidary holds a parliamentary majority, the cleanup tax can be annulled in the next sitting of Parliament, this Thursday.

“There is no need to wait for a month or for three months as a decision can be taken in the Parliament sitting this Thursday. On Wednesday, they can examine the issue in commissions and 63 MPs can cancel the cleanup tax not only in Chisinau, but all over the country by their votes. Such a thing is probably right. There should be no differences,” stated the mayor.

MP Gaik Vartanean said that this is a legislative proposal that he will submit based on the mayor general’s request and it refers to all the settlements of the country. If a tax is annulled in a city, the same practice should be applied all over the country.

If the legislative initiative is adopted, the cleanup tax will be cancelled as from 2024.

Last week, the group of the Party of Action and Solidarity on the Chisinau Municipal Council demanded to annul the new cleanup tax of 120 lei per person a year. According to the PAS councilors, this tax is an additional financial burden for families from the municipality, which was introduced non-transparently and covertly so as to cover the losses caused by the contracts and fraudulent concessions signed by the mayor in favor of his friends and supporters. For his part, the mayor of Chisinau said the PAS councilors’ demand to annul the cleanup tax is cheap populism. The cleanup tax of 10 lei a month was approved by the municipal councilors two years ago, but owing to the delays at the central level, the introduction of the tax was put off until this year.
