Mayor Chirtoaca: In 2007 Chisinau was like an edifice about to collapse, now it’s ready to grow

“In 2007, Chisinau was like an edifice on the verge of collapse, with shaky walls and putrid basement, and the main goal had been to improve its facade”, declared Mayor Dorin Chirtoaca while presenting his 3-year activity report today, June 18. In addition to the results and successes he mentioned, Chirtoaca assured he planned many other projects to further develop the city, Info-Prim Neo reports. Chirtoaca emphasized the 6.000 jobs created as a result of finishing the construction of some social and cultural centers as one of his main achievements. A block of flats for Transnistrian refugees was built, 1000 parking lots were created, funding from the European Commission was obtained for assuring energy efficiency, rain drainage and so on. Chirtoaca also mentioned that the process of draining out the mud accumulated for 40 years in the waste-water purifying plant is nearing its final phase. The mayor explained this while a group of citizens protested with a “Dorin Chirtoaca, in Anenii Noi stinks as well” placard. “It stinks in Chisinau, it stinks in Anenii Noi” the Mayor replied. “You would better give us some help” he added. Moreover, he noted that the purifying plant would be modernized so that the smell wasn’t so strong. Furthermore, Chirtoaca claims the Valea Morilor Park will be set up, the construction of Mircea cel Batran Avenue will be finished, a funding agreement will be signed with EBRD and 90 new trolleybuses will be bought. The Mayor also plans to approve and implement the project of re-organizing the Central Market, to continue supporting poor segments of the population, to build a shelter for stray dogs, to set up the Bic River valley, to develop the city according to the General Urbanistical Plan. “We should not forget we’re still in a crisis situation because the Republic of Moldova is dependent on external debts, as a result of the heritage left by the former communist government. If we give up populism and work properly, we will be able to reach a decent, European living standard” the Mayor stated. After presenting his report, Chirtoaca was asked whether his plans included a wedding, but he avoided to give a straight answer. “They say I got married to the City Hall so I’m not sure I should search for another wife” he joked.
