May 31 – World No Tobacco Day

A chance to call attention of the world to the threats of smoking and its negative consequences is offered by the World No Tobacco Day declared in 1987 by the World Health Organisation (WHO). The theme of this year’s Day is “Smoke Free inside: create and enjoy”, Info-Prim Neo reports. On the occasion of the World No Tobacco Day, the Centre for Information, Instruction and Social Analysis has presented at the Narcology Dispensary an exhibition with different drawings on the topic “Stop smoking! This is not a place for it”. The exhibition has been organised as part the information campaign on smoking in Moldova and contains just a small part of the works of the children and youngsters from all around the country. According to WHO, Tobacco is the second leading cause of death in the world. It is well known that half the people who smoke regularly today – about 650 million people – will eventually be killed by tobacco. Equally alarming is the fact that hundreds of thousands of people who have never smoked die each year from diseases caused by breathing second-hand tobacco smoke. The Organisation considers it as a major risk for health, as it causes such illnesses as lung cancer, cardiovascular diseases and atherosclerosis. Preventing these risks is the most important action to be done at the moment, as the evidence demands an immediate, decisive response, to protect the health of all people. Specialists of the Ministry of Health state that the tobacco epidemic has a noticeable effect on Moldovan population as well, where almost 46% are smokers and 28% of them are women.
