Massive snowfall leaves cars stranded, villages without power

Twenty drivers needed the intervention of rescuers today as their cars became stranded by heavy snow, and partial power cuts were reported in a number of villages, IPN reports.

According to the Civil Protection and Emergencies Service, while the national roads are overall driveable, driving conditions are challenging. Rescue intervention was needed to help out twenty cars that risked blocking some national roads.

Particularly difficult driving conditions were reported in Cahul's villages of Valeni, Cislita Prut, Burlaceni and Iujnaia.

At the same time, partial power outages were reported in 16 villages in 6 districts – Hincesti, Straseni, Orhei, Cantemir, Cahul, and Cimislia – and in the Gagauz autonomy.

A code-orange heavy snowfall alert is in place today nationwide, followed by a code-yellow advisory for extreme cold weather.

The police has warned motorists to expect hazardous driving conditions, advising them against long journeys. To avoid being caught off guard, motorists are reminded to carry a bag of sand, a shovel, a warm blanket and a vacuum flask with hot drinks. Drivers are also reminded to always keep a safe distance between vehicles, to drive with the low beam turned on during the daytime as well, and periodically check the battery.
