Marius Lazurca: Romania’s assistance depends on the order in key areas of Moldova

Order is needed in the economic and financial sectors of Moldova and the assistance offered by Romania depends on this order. At the same time, the conditions imposed by Romania for providing assistance are a model borrowed by the European Union based on the ‘more for more’ principle (reforms in exchange for support), Romania’s Ambassador to Moldova Marius Lazurca said in the public discussion “Moldovan-Romanian relations: evolutions, expectations, quality measurements” that was staged by IPN News Agency and Radio Moldova.

The diplomat noted that in the context of the provision of the Romanian loan of €150 million, reference terms were formulated that will create in Moldova a base of stability and reforms and will ensure the funds from Romania are used for the benefit of the Moldovan people. “Thinking about what the citizens want, we tried to define the context in which this money will be useful. Order is needed in the banking system. This means not only filling the gaps, but also that the system must generate profit and fuel the economic cycle,” stated Marius Lazurca.

According to him, for these reasons they needed an analysis of the Moldovan banking system. “We want the banking system to work as a banking system that would fuel economy, not the Ministry of Finance,” noted the diplomat.

He stated that Romania has a very close dialogue with the Moldovan authorities not only on the loan, but also on a wide range of subjects. “In connection with this loan, Premier Dacian Ciolos sent a letter to Prime Minister Pavel Filip by which Romania presented its position. What we wanted is for these funds that come from the state budget of Romania to really help the Republic of Moldova, to increase its capacity to stabilize the economy,” said Marius Lazurca.

He also said that the Romanian Premier’s letter was the model of a new type of relations that the EU wants with Moldova. “The fact that Dacian Ciolos’ letter is similar to the EU requirements is not accidental,” stated the ambassador.

The public discussion of April 29 forms part of the 53rd installment of the series of debates “Developing political culture by public debates” that are organized with the support of the German Foundation “Hanns Seidel”.
