Marius Lazurca: Romania wants money to reach Chisinau as soon as possible

Romania’s Ambassador to Moldova Marius Lazurca said Romania wants the loan of €150 million provided by it to reach Chisinau as soon as possible so that it becomes an instrument for promoting pro-European reforms. In an interview for Radio Free Europe, the diplomat said stability, a majority coalition in Moldova’s Parliament and a Government that would undertake the commitments stipulated in the Association Agreement with the EU are needed for the purpose, IPN reports.

Marius Lazurca said that asked by the Government headed by Valeriu Strelet, this loan, at least its first tranche, was designed to ensure the stability of governance in Moldova in a delicate and uncertain moment for the country. In its essence, this loan was actually intended to provide the government of Moldova with an instrument for continuing and accelerating the European reformation process in accordance with the provisions of the Association Agreement.

“So, the two conditions for this loan to become operational are very simple. A government that would be supported by a majority coalition in Moldova’s Parliament in its European pro-reformist approaches is needed. Otherwise, this loan cannot achieve its objectives and the initial agreement will not be respected,” noted the diplomat.

Asked about the absolutely different impact of the protests mounted in Chisinau and Bucharest and about the way in which the Romanian authorities meet the demands of the people protesting in Bucharest, Marius Lazurca said the authorities’ attention does not consist only in their resignation. “I think that since the population of the Republic of Moldova started to signal that it lost patience, that the confidence in the parties that won the elections in 2014 is fading away and that the processes to fight corruption and to improve the business climate in Moldova need to be stepped up, the authorities’ attitude has changed,” stated the official.

The ambassador added that people’s expectations shape the behavior of parties and of the political leaders in a positive way for Moldova, even if not very evidently. If the positive energies existing in Moldova are not gathered together, the crisis will deepen and will turn from severe into tragic and it will be much harder to manage things at that moment. But this situation could be avoided as most of the relevant Moldovan political players who are making effort to identify a solution in the current conditions seem to have a responsible will.
