Marinuta resigned after a discussion with head of state

Minister of Defense Vitalie Marinuta said that he tendered his resignation after he had a discussion with President Nicolae Timofti, during which the head of state criticized the state of affairs in the army, IPN reports.

The discussion was held within the meeting of the College Board of the Ministry of Defense, where the head of state spoke about the lack of discipline that resulted in cases of suicide in the army and about the inefficiency of a number of the Ministry’s departments, the President’s spokesman Vlad Turcanu stated for Publika TV channel.

Vlad Turcanu also said the resignation, which reportedly was already signed by Prime Minister Iurie Leanca, hasn’t yet reached the Presidential Office. Spokeswoman for the Premier Liliana Vitu confirmed this information.

According to Publika TV, Ion Hadarca, the leader of the Liberal Reforming Party of which Marinuta forms part, said that Vitalie Marinuta informed him about his decision to resign from the post of minister of defense.

Vitalie Marinuta offered his resignation on February 27. He had held the post since September 2009.
