Speaker Marian Lupu said that if the date of the presidential elections is not set in the near future, he will ask the Constitutional Court to rule on the opportunity of dissolving Parliament, Info-Prim Neo reports. “We will not accept restarting the procedure for identifying candidates for the presidency. We do not have guarantees that this procedure will not be postponed endlessly. We are waiting for the Liberals’ answer as regards candidate Veronica Bacalu. If no progress is made in the nearest future, I will ask the Constitutional Court to pronounce on the opportunity of dissolving the legislative body, as I cannot initiate the dissolution procedure without consulting the Court,” Marian Lupu said in a news conference given after the February 24 sitting of Parliament. The Head of Parliament said that last week they satisfied the Liberal Party’s demand and postponed setting the date of the presidential elections, but it asked again for a postponement. “They delay things. We invited the Liberals to discuss the candidates together with us, but they did not accept. They wanted only one candidate to be fielded. Now I ask them to tell us what they want. If they want posts, they should say so. We want a sincere and open dialogue,” said Marian Lupu. The PDM and PLDM proposed two candidates for the presidency – academician Ion Ababii and IMF economist Veronica Bacalu. The Liberal leader Mihai Ghimpu said that after discussing with Ion Ababii, he understood that the latter is not decided to become President. He also said that they cannot accept Veronica Bacalu because they know nothing about her. Thus, the fixing of the date of the presidential elections was postponed for a week.
