Marian Lupu insists on annulment of parliamentary immunity

The problem of parliamentary immunity needs to be solved and the subject is not a closed one, the chairman of the Democratic Party (PDM) Marian Lupu said in the program “Replica” on Prime TV channel, IPN reports.

According to Lupu, the parliamentary immunity is too broad and should be thus limited. “Those who rule the country must enjoy equal work conditions and I do not understand why the members of the Government do not have immunity, while the MPs should have it,” he stated.

Asked to comment on the vote against annulling the parliamentary immunity given by the Democratic Party’s president of honor Dumitru Diacov, Marian Lupu recognized that he was surprised as Diacov is one of the authors of the given law. But he considers that it was a personal opinion that should be respected. “This example showed that there is no dictatorship in the PDM,” said the Democratic leader.

Corneliu Ciurea, expert of the Institute for Development and Social Initiative “Viitorul”, said the subject of loss of parliamentary immunity is not as important as, for example, the Education Code. But the fact that it was rejected by the opposition could be used by the ruling parties in the election campaign.

The bill on parliamentary immunity, which was drafted by the Liberal Democratic Party and endorsed by the Constitutional Court, was put to the vote in Parliament on July 4. It needed at least 67 votes to be passed, but garnered only 55.
