If a decorative head of state is wanted, his powers will also be decorative, Acting President of Moldova and Head of Parliament Marian Lupu said in a meeting of the Chisinau Press Club, quoted by Info-Prim Neo.
Marian Lupu said he will accept not to run for the presidency and will support a neutral candidate only if the Alliance for European Integration (AEI) takes such a decision. He stated that before a new candidate is proposed, the Constitution will have to be modified so as to limit the powers of the apolitical President.
”The powers stipulated in the Constitution are not for an apolitical person as the current governing alliance made certain commitments. An apolitical person has nothing to do with these commitments and no responsibility in this respect,” Marian Lupu said.
According to him, the Communist Party (PCRM) planned a number of steps aimed at destroying the ruling alliance. He said the party headed by Vladimir Voronin wants the format of the government coalition to be changed so that it returns to power. Thus, the PCRM demanded that the ministers responsible for the socioeconomic sector be dismissed.
”The PCRM’s objective is evident. They want to provoke arguments and misunderstandings so as to destroy the AEI,” Marian Lupu explained.
He considers the PCRM’s proposal to field an apolitical candidate for head of state causes only tension between the components of the AEI and this is a resistance test for the alliance.
