March to improve quality of water supplied to schools and kindergartens in Chisinau

The problem of quality of water in schools and kindergartens was the focus on an event staged in Chisinau on June 1. The march “Clean water = healthy child”, organized by initiative groups, such as “Solidary Parents”, “Women with Ideas” and the Union of Students of Moldova, involved several dozen persons.

The participants went on a march from the square of the UNIC Store towards the Government Building, where they left a petition by which they demanded to improve the quality of water in schools and kindergartens.

Alla Revenco, of the Association “Solidary Parents”, has told IPN that the goal of the event is to sensitize the public to the bad quality of the water supplied to schools and kindergartens. “Many of the samples of water show the water is unfit to drink and can cause serious diseases in our children,” stated Alla Revenco.

She noted the problem can be solved by supplying the education institutions with bottled water in the short term and by installing new water pipes and by building drinking water springs in schools in the medium and long term.

“By the petition addressed to the Government, we notify the executive of such a problem and provide several solutions to it. We are not specialists, but hope that those who are experts in the field will find optimal solutions,” noted Alla Revenco.

Members of the Movement “Extinction Rebellion” joined in the event. Member Ion Ungureanu stated for IPN that they want to sanitize the public to the problems related to the quality of water.

“We witness a general crisis related to environmental protection, namely to the quality of water. The third-degree pollution level of the Nistru shows the main source of drinking water in Chisinau contains all kinds of nitrates and nitrites. The children in particular should drink clean water. This is our message,” stated Ion Ungureanu.

The participants included Igor Hâncu from Floreni village of Anenii Noi district. He came to the event by his bike and accompanied by his two children. “I want my children to have a healthy future , to drink water that will be not a source of disease, but a source of health,” he told IPN. The man specified that the running water in Floreni is very dirty, but the authorities refuse to solve the problem, denying its existence.
