March to commemorate road traffic victims
The Ministry of the Interior will organise in Chisinau a series of events to mark the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims.
According to Ala Meleca, press division head at the Ministry, the purpose of the events is to prevent the tragic consequences of the road accidents. “The necessity of organising these events derives in particular from the fact that 2 or 3 persons die every day on Moldovan roads”, Ala Meleca said.
On Saturday, November 17, at 10:30 am, a convoy headed by a trailer truck damaged in a road accident will start marching from the Traffic Police headquarters towards the National Assembly Square. The truck will be loaded with black balloons that will represent the souls of the people killed in car crashes.
In the National Assembly Square will be organised a range of memorial events, including a painting competition and a balloon launch. A religious ceremony to commemorate road traffic victims will also be held.
Since the start of the year, Traffic Police recorded 2,907 accidents which killed 375 people and wounded other 2,691.
In October 2005, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution to recognise the third Sunday in November of every year as the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims, as an "appropriate acknowledgment for victims of road traffic crashes and their families".
Worldwide, over 3,000 people are killed and 100,000 injured every day on the road.
