The initiative groups “Spirit Romanesc” (“Romanian Spirit”) and ”Desteptarea” (“Awakening”), which were joined by a number of people, movements and organizations, marched in Chisinau on December 1, celebrating Romania's National Day and 92 years of the Great Union of 1918, Info-Prim Neo reports. The marchers set off from the Academy of Sciences of Moldova and went along Stefan cel Mare Blvd., heading for the Great National Assembly Square. They carried the tricolor and chanted patriotic slogans. “We came to celebrate Romanian's Day. The march brought together people from Moldova and Romania. The number of participants will rise when the population wakes up,” said one of the organizers, Constantin Ungureanu, who is a member of the action group “Noii Golani”. “By this action, we aim to develop the patriotic spirit,” said a participant in the march Cristofor, 50. “The National Assembly of all Romanians in Transylvania, Banat and the Hungarian Country, gathered by its rightful representatives at Alba Iulia on December 1, 1918, decreed the unification of Romanians and of all the territories inhabited by them. The National Assembly proclaims above all the inalienable right of the Romanian nation to the whole Banat bordered by the Mures and Tisa rivers and the Danube,” says the Resolution adopted by the representatives of all the nations and ethnic groups, who came together on December 1, 1918 in Alba Iulia to seal the unification of the country. Back in 1918 the Romanian Kingdom was formed of Moldavia and Wallachia. Other Romanian provinces were under either Hungarian or Ottoman occupation. December 1st celebrates today not only the union between Transylvania and the Romanian Kingdom, but also the union of the provinces of Banat, Bessarabia and Bukovina with the two. Moldavia and Wallachia united in 1859 and formed the “United Principalities of Moldavia and Wallachia.”
