March 16 presidential elections will fail, poll

80% of the respondents of an opinion poll carried out within the televised project “Replica” on Prime TV consider that the President of Moldova will not be elected on March 16. The program’s invitees – chairwoman of the National Liberal Party Vitalia Pavlichenko, deputy head of the Democratic Action Party Corneliu Gurin, political analyst Viorel Cibotaru, and the leader of the Republican People’s Party Nicolae Andronic – said their opinions coincided with the results of the poll, Info-Prim Neo reports. “I don’t think the head of state will be elected on March 16. If the President is elected, he/she will not be pro-Romania, but pro-Russia and we should not expect unionist changes. They are simply not ready to vote for a powerful candidate, especially a woman. I think the female candidates they intend to propose are women who can be directed,” said Vitalia Pavlichenko. Corneliu Gurin stated that the names of the candidates that appeared in the mass media last week deserve to become head of state, but they will not be elected because the MPs do not want a better and worthier President than they. “There are two possible developments. The first derives from the politicians’ wish to obtain a delay, while the second from the competition existing inside the alliance, where some components want the President to be elected, while others want early legislative elections,” said Viorel Cibotaru. Nicolae Andronic said the issue of presidential elections aims to divert attention from the serious economic problems faced by the country so that the people do not raise questions about the pensions, salaries, etc. “There is yet a positive thing in this situation – if a head of state is not elected, there will be announced early elections,” he added. The invitees anticipated that the protests staged by the Communist Party (PCRM) may be successful. “The Communists do not protest, but prepare for a new, well-thought-out election campaign,” stated Viorel Cibotaru. The Alliance for European Integration scheduled the presidential elections for March 16. The name of the candidate for the presidency is to be announced on March 12. The PCRM said they will boycott the March 16 sitting of Parliament and will mount large-scale protests in Chisinau on that day.
