The construction of a European-gauge railway line between Iasi and Chisinau is one of the priorities of the Social Democratic Party's candidate for President of Romania, Marcel Ciolacu, in terms of relations with the Republic of Moldova. The Prime Minister reiterated this wish during the launch event of the new electric train, which will run on the Bucharest-Brasov line, IPN reports.
"The Iasi-Chisinau project is also very important. You are well aware that the Republic of Moldova is still running on the Soviet gauge and it would be the beginning of the modernization of the railway infrastructure", Marcel Ciolacu said.
The announcement was made in the context of statements by Romanian Transport Minister Sorin Grindeanu on Romania's interconnection with the European high-speed rail infrastructure. The official also said Romania will have 189 new electric trains by 2028, with the next 36 scheduled to arrive in the country by 2026.
For his part, PSD candidate in Romania's parliamentary elections, Iurie Ciocan, wrote in a Facebook post that "a strong Romania will bring security and development to the Republic of Moldova. According to Ciocan, the railroad connection between Chisinau and Bucharest, along with the Unirii highway to Chisinau, will generate investment and economic growth, including new jobs.
"Romania, under the Ciolacu Government, is developing at an unprecedented pace. This development must continue, which is why it is important to vote for Marcel Ciolacu's candidacy in the presidential elections, and for the parliamentary elections - the PSD team of professionals. We already feel Romania's concern for the Republic of Moldova, and with a social-democratic president and government, Bucharest's support for Chisinau will increase much more", wrote Iurie Ciocan.
Earlier, Romanian Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu announced the decision of the government he leads to extend the A8 Union Highway to the left of the Prut River, as far as Chisinau. The official from Bucharest claims that the large-scale project, already launched in Romania, is part of a vast list of projects for the interconnection with the Republic of Moldova.
"We have one more investment to make - to link Iasi with Chisinau. The Republic of Moldova is a prisoner of the Russian railroad system, the whole system is broad gauge, and when you extend the highway from Iași to Chisinau, you will be the first to connect the Republic of Moldova with Europe. And of course there will be an explosion of investment for the Republic of Moldova," said Marcel Ciolacu.
