The Republic of Moldova risks losing foreign financing for different projects because of the abuses committed by state functionaries, Igor Turcanu, manager of a project that is financed by the Government of Sweden and implemented in Drochia, said in a news conference at Info-Prim Neo on December 13. According to him, he met with a series of impediments created by the district’s administration and other functionaries, Info-Prim Neo reports.
The project to renovate the sports school in Drochia town started in 2010. Sweden offered a grant of almost half a million euros for the purpose. According to the project manager, everything went well until 2011, when local elections were held and a new head was named to manage the district. The district head asked €50,000 from him for allowing him to continue work. Igor Turcanu refused to pay and was thus subject to dozens of inspections and office break-ins. He considers that all these acts were done by order of the district head, who intends to compromise this project.
Igor Turcanu also said that in this period he was dismissed by a decision of the district council, but he does not agree with it because he was employed by the Embassy of Sweden, not by the local authorities. Despite the erected impediments, the works were 90% finished.
Legal consultant and co-author of the project Svetlana Chesari said that when they took the first steps they were very optimistic and thought they will be able to present a success project. “Unfortunately, our experiences were sad. We met with all the scourges of our society,” she stated.
She also said that though they were persecuted, they managed to almost complete this project. By making this case project, they try to sensitize the public opinion and to make the rulers to intervene and enforce the law. Otherwise, Moldova risks losing other foreign investments.
