Police arrested a Chisinau man, 21, on suspicion of beating his 19-year-old girlfriend and setting her on fire. Her partially carbonized body was found near a dumpsite on Uzinelor Street in Chisinau. The suspect is said to have confessed to the crime. According to his accounts, he and his girlfriend went out together on August 8 in the evening to meet some friends for a drink near the dumpsite. After the party was over and they were left alone, the couple started fighting. Suspecting his girlfriend of infidelity, the man struck the woman in the head twice, after which she lost consciousness. Then the man covered her face with a jacket and set it on fire, fleeing the scene afterwards. According to the police, the man had been living with his girlfriend for two years. Both were working for the dumpsite in question. If found guilty, the court could send the man up to 25 years behind bars.
