Man hospitalized with rabies after bitten by dog

A man aged 39 from Causeni district was taken to the Clinical Hospital of Infectious Diseases “Toma Ciorba” with suspected rabies. He was bitten by his own dog, who died two days after the incident that happened on July 2. The man didn’t seek first aid then and didn’t follow appropriate treatment. The Ministry of Health warns that a doctor should be seen immediately in case of animal bites, IPN reports.

The man went to the Causeni District Hospital on August 30. He was hospitalized in the intensive care section with difficulty in breathing caused by water or the sound of water, thirst, fever and general weakness. He is now in a serious, but stable state.

Annually, the National Food Safety Agency identifies 130 – 200 animals suffering from rabies, in most of the administrative units of the country. Foxes and other wild animals such as polecats, martens and badgers or domestic animals such as cows, goats, sheep and horses remain the main source of infection. The infection is usually passed by bite.

According to the Ministry of Health, the primary assistance in case of animal bites is provided free. This includes the abundant wash of the wound with soap and its treatment with iodine of 5% or ethyl alcohol of 70%. A sterile dressing is then placed. The wound must not be processed surgically during the first three days, except for wounds that require surgery according to vital indications.

The anti-rabies prophylactic treatment includes the administration of a vaccine and is prescribed only by a specialist doctor.
