A 34-year-old man was sentenced to 5 years and 6 months in prison for putting counterfeit money into circulation and for fraud. With the counterfeit money, the young man bought two motorcycles, IPN reports.
The Prosecutor General's Office said that the defendant put into circulation counterfeit banknotes with the nominal value of €100. He used the money to purchase the two motorcycles, in exchange for amounts equivalent to 66,800 Moldovan lei, at the official exchange rate of that period.
The defendant was also found guilty of fraud. In 2023, the young man misled a person under the pretext of organizing a vacation in Turkey. He claimed that he could facilitate the purchase of tourist packages at a reduced price and got €3,900 without providing the promised services and without repaying the money.
The court sentenced the defendant to one year in prison for fraud and to 5 years for putting into circulation counterfeit money. By partially cumulating the sentences, it issued a final sentence of 5 years and 6 months in a semi-closed prison.
The sentence passed by the Buiucani Court of Chisinau City is not final and can be appealed to the Centru Court of Appeals.
