Makaton language adjusted to Moldovan context

450 words deciphered in symbols and signs, which form the main vocabulary of the Makaton language for children with communication problems aged between zero and seven, were adjusted to the Moldovan context. For the purpose, a group of national practitioners were trained by professionals of the British Makaton Association within a workshop, IPN has learned from the Ministry of Education.

The Makaton language is an easily used and assimilated instrument that helps the children make themselves understood by parents, educators and family members. The child is helped to easier communicate their basic needs and to integrate into school and community.

Senior consultant at the Ministry of Education Viorica Mart said the Makaton language offers a chance to the children from the very first years of live to communicate and be understood by those around. The instrument supports the educational policies promoted by the Ministry of Education in the field of inclusive education.

The total value of the project is €680,000 and is financed by the European Union.

Makaton is an internationally recognized communication program used by children and adults with communication and learning difficulties. Those who use Makaton are encouraged to communicate using signs and gradually replace the signs with words, after making a connection between the sign and word.
