MAIB shares were taken by fraud not raider attack, hearings

The shares in Moldova Agroindbank (MAIB) were taken by fraud not raider attack as announced earlier. Such a conclusion was reached as a result of the hearings held by the parliamentary commission on national security, defense and public order, Info-Prim Neo reports. The hearings were held behind closed doors and lasted for about three hours. They involved representatives of the Prosecutor General’s Office, the Security and Information Service, the Ministry of the Interior, and the Center for Combating Corruption and Economic Crime (CCCEC). After the hearings, the commission’s chairman, Democrat lawmaker Alexandru Stoianoglo said the law enforcement bodies took all the necessary measures. “We established that these cases are different and not connected between them. I wouldn’t say it was a raider attack. It was a swindle. In the future, we will discuss the measures that must be taken to stop such acts and how the persons responsible for such a situation should be penalized,” he stated. CCCEC head Viorel Chetraru also said it was a swindle. “We are collecting evidence to prove the guilt of the persons in this case,” he stressed. Prosecutor General Valeriu Zubko said only the institution he heads reacted promptly after the information about the share theft was made public. Commission member Alexandru Cimbriciuc, a Liberal-Democrat MP, said the meeting helped elucidate a number of things. “I think a well-organized group of swindlers works in Moldova. Many things are yet unclear and thus the hearings will go on,” he said. Another commission member, Liberal lawmaker Vladimir Lupan said they cannot speak about a raider attack. “Different persons are involved, but the schemes employed are very much the same. A number of questions appeared,” he stated. Communist MP Artur Reshetnikov, who is also a member of the commission, said the hearings did not reveal much information. He considers that a scenario was prepared, where two forces of the Alliance for European Integration fight between them. “Unfortunately, this affects the economic stability and security and the security of the financial-banking sector. We demanded that the hearings be public, but they did not want to. They probably hide something,” he said. The hearings will continue on September 19 within the same commission. Last week, Prime Minister Vlad Filat said four banks operating in Moldova – MAIB, Universalbank, Banca de Economii and Victoriabank - were the target of raider attacks. According to him, a group of European investors on July 28 were deprived of their shareholdings in MAIB. On September 14, the Supreme Court of Justice restored their ownership rights.
