Maia Sandu: We stand united against hatred, anti-Semitism and discrimination

Moldova is committed to protecting and preserving Jewish memory, heritage and life, stated President Maia Sandu in a message marking the 120th anniversary of the anti-Jewish pogrom that took place in the Moldovan capital.

“120 years after the horrific anti-Jewish massacre known as the Chisinau pogrom, we remember the victims and condemn the violence. Moldova is committed to protecting and preserving Jewish memory, heritage and life. We stand united against hatred, anti-Semitism and discrimination," Maia Sandu posted on Twitter.

The Jewish pogrom took place in Chisinau during April 6-8, 1903 (April 19-21 according to the Julian calendar). At that time, 110 thousand people lived in the capital of Bessarabia, then a governorate of the Russian Empire, of whom 50 thousand were Jews. During the Chisinau pogrom, 49 Jews were murdered, and over 600 others were injured.
