Maia Sandu transmits message of commemoration for victims of 9/11 attacks

President Maia Sandu transmitted a message of commemoration for the victims of the 9/11 terrorist attacks in the U.S. “It has been 20 years during which thousands of families from all over the world continue to mourn for the dead - nearly 3,000 people who on that tragic day went calmly to work or on trips and hundreds of people who died later owing to the health complications caused by the toxic asbestos from the buildings that collapsed,” runs the message that is quoted by IPN.

Presider Sandu noted the day of September 11, 2001 showed how interconnected and how fragile the world in which the people live is.

“The lesson of this day tells us that the current governments should be more solidary in front of global dangers so as to ensure the citizens’ security and that the rule of law, democracy and freedom should be defended day by day. This is the foundation of a society in which the human life has priority,” said Maia Sandu.

September 11 attacks, a series of airline hijackings and suicide attacks committed in 2001 by 19 militants associated with the Islamic extremist group al-Qaeda against targets in the United States, are the deadliest terrorist attacks on American soil in U.S. history. The attacks against New York City and Washington, D.C., caused extensive death and destruction and triggered an enormous U.S. effort to combat terrorism. Some 2,750 people were killed in New York, 184 at the Pentagon, and 40 in Pennsylvania (where one of the hijacked planes crashed after the passengers attempted to retake the plane); all 19 terrorists died. More than 400 police officers and firefighters were killed. Among the dead were citizens of 90 states.
