President Maia Sandu said the Moldovan authorities mobilized swiftly and are on alert. The developments in Ukraine continue to be closely monitored. The official noted she is proud of the civilians who became involved to offer support to the Ukrainians who found refuge in Moldova, IPN reports.

“Yesterday morning, we woke up in a new world that is more violent, more uncertain and more unstable. It is a world in which unprovoked war is possible and causes victims close to the borders of the Republic of Moldova. Ukraine is our friend. Our relatives live in Ukraine. The tragedy experienced by the hundreds of thousands of families is our pain. These are terrible moments for those who found themselves on the path of the menace without having any blame,” said President Sandu.

“In difficult times, we act calmly and responsibly so as to ensure the safety of our citizens first and foremost. In such times, as always in fact, we think about the people, our citizens and the citizens of Ukraine who suffer the most as a result of the war. During two days, the Ukrainian citizens have lived with the reality of military actions that promoted them to flee their homes. As humans, we should now make common cause with the Ukrainians. The Republic of Moldova showed that it is near the people of Ukraine who need assistance.”

Over 16,000 people who had to flee from the war entered Moldova during 24 hours. Many of them came to relatives or friends, but the state helps those who need assistance and offers them transport and accommodation places. Even if the number of migrants increases the next days, all those who will seek help will be offered support. The Moldovans mobilized and are ready to house refugees. The local and central authorities and the business community also mobilized, said President Sandu, thanking those who show generosity and solidarity.
