Maia Sandu: Today relations with Romania are at highest level in last 30 years

“Romania has always stood by the Republic of Moldova and the relations between the two countries are now at the highest level in the last 30 years. But a lot is yet to be done. The experience and expertise of Romania have been and will continue to be of aid,” President Maia Sandu stated at the beginning of the joint meeting of the Parliaments of the Republic of Moldova and Romania that is taking place in Chisinau, IPN reports.

President Sandu said today’s joint meeting logically and naturally matches the ascending relationship between the Republic of Moldova and Romania, which was relaunched at the end of 2020. The meeting of the two Parliaments is held after a number of meetings with the President of Romania Klaus Iohannis and the joint meeting of the Governments of the two states of February 11.

“I’m confident that today’s event will stimulate the cooperation between Chisinau and Bucharest for implementing infrastructure projects, for strengthening the energy independence or for modernizing local communities. The cooperation between the legislative bodies will be extremely important on our European path, in the process of harmonizing our legislation to the European Union’s legislation, and Romania is eager to generously share its relevant experience with us,” stated Maia Sandu.

She expressed her confidence that the close partnership with Romania will help the Republic of Moldova overcome the difficulties and uncertainties caused by the war in Ukraine. “We go through difficult times in which solidarity, care, mutual assistance are essential. The European Union was founded based on these values. Only this way we can overcome the tragedy and destructions of the war. Now more than ever we need your support and assistance for keeping peace in the Republic of Moldova and for offering safety to our citizens so that we are able to cope with the unprecedented challenges,” stated the official.

President Sandu noted that the entry into the EU is not only a nice dream, but is also Moldova’s chance to remain a democratic country, to cope in a more difficult geopolitical context and it is the safest way to stability and development. “Yesterday’s decision by the European Commission to recommend the Council to offer the Republic of Moldova the candidate country status is very good news for us. But we know that the most important decision will be taken next week. At this important stage for us, we bank on your support. We ask you to go to European institutions, to contact you counterparts from the EU member states and tell them that the Republic of Moldova fully shares the values of the European Union and deserves to be offered the chance to become part of the big European family,” said Maia Sandu.

A statement is to be signed in the first joint meeting of the Parliaments of the Republic of Moldova and Romania. Before the meeting, the delegations of the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies of the Parliament of Romania led by Presidents Florin-Vasile Cîțu and Ion-Marcel Ciolacu laid flowers at the Monument to Ruler Stephan the Great and Holy in central Chisinau.
