Maia Sandu to notify Constitutional Court

President Maia Sandu said Parliament failed to vote in a Government by two attempts within 45 days of the first request to invest the candidate for Prime Minister and more than three months have passed since the Chicu Government resigned. Therefore, the legal circumstances for dissolving Parliament appeared and the Constitutional Court will be asked to ascertain these circumstances, IPN reports.

In a press briefing, President Sandu said that as the Constitution provides, she had consultations with the parliament groups to discuss the political situation in the country and the eventual dissolution of Parliament.

According to the official, a number of MPs tried to persuade the public that they show care for the citizens, but the laws and decisions these vote continue to be against the people. “These MPs promote to posts judges who wronged many people and caused damage of tens of millions of lei to the state budget. These MPs oppose the foreign assistance programs that are needed by the economy and the sectors affected by the pandemic. These MPs protect corrupt groups, improvising further the country,” said President Sandu.

She noted that Parliament had the possibility of investing a professional government for two times, but in both of the cases the MPs opposed. But the people need a functional state, a functional Parliament that would support a stable and competent government. The snap elections are the people’s chance to elect the MPs who would really represent their interests and would rid the country of the crisis and corruption.

Therefore, Maia Sandu decided to request the Constitutional Court to ascertain the circumstances that lead to the dissolution of Parliament. “If the Constitutional Court says that these circumstances exist, I will dissolve Parliament and the people will make a judgment,” stated Maia Sandu.

President Maia Sandu on March 26 invited the parliamentary groups to consultations after a quorum at the March 25 sitting of Parliament was not present and the government program and the Cabinet proposed by candidate for Prime Minister Igor Grosu could not be considered. This was the second attempt to vote in a Government with full powers, after the first attempt of February 11 also failed.
