Maia Sandu thanks European partners for support

Prime Minister elect Maia Sandu welcomes the statement by High Representative/Vice-President Federica Mogherini and Commissioner Johannes Hahn on the formation of the government coalition in Moldova. In a press briefing, she said the EU officially recognized the government voted in by Parliament on June 8, IPN reports.

According to Maia Sandu, the EU officials’ statement is an additional argument for the former government to accept to peacefully pass on the power. “We are firmly convinced that similar messages will soon come from all our international partners as they, as each of the citizens of our country, want democracy and wellbeing to exist in the Republic of Moldova,” stated the PAS leader.

She noted that all Moldova’s partners want the abuses, fear and destabilization to stop immediately. Both the Western partners and the people want a legitimate and democratic government that would ensure the implementation and extension of all the international commitments assumed by Moldova, first of all the Association Agreement with the EU.

The politician said that unlike the former government, they will respect all the commitments to reform and the basic principles enshrined in the Association Agreement. “The respect for the rule of law, democracy and the human rights are the foundation on which we will build our relationship with the European Union,” she stated.

Maia Sandu added she appreciates and shares the EU’s call for clam and restraint. “The peaceful transition of power is the only acceptable solution for overcoming the political crisis caused by those who stick to posts and power in spite of the will expressed by the people on February 24,” she said.
