The candidate for President of the Party “Action and Solidarity” (PAS) Maia Sandu proposed installing video cameras in polling places. She addressed such a request to the Government, Parliament and the Central Election Commission in a news conference. According to her, such a move will help hold relatively fair elections, IPN reports.

Maia Sandu said the cameras must be installed so that each electoral player, observer and ordinary person can follow online the voting and vote count processes. “We are sure that this initiative is very important for the 2016 elections, first of all because it will enable to reduce the risk of election rigging. When real images from each polling place are broadcast live, we can minimize the possible frauds on the election day,” stated the PAS candidate.

According to her, the CEC has the right to purchase the necessary equipment without holding public tender contests. “So, in a relatively short period of time, the CEC can contract a company to set up these cameras,” stated Maia Sandu. She added that from legal viewpoint, it is not mandatory for video surveillance to be stipulated in the Election Code as an ordinary decision by the CEC is enough.

Maia Sandu noted that if the Election Code needs to be amended, the parliamentary alliance, if it wants to ensure as free and fair elections as possible, can swiftly pass the necessary amendments.

According to the candidate, one camera at a polling place is enough, while the total costs for installing cameras should not exceed 10 million lei.
