Maia Sandu: Socialists are not ready to support justice sector reform and fight corruption

President-elect Maia Sandu said she does not believe in Igor Dodon’s good intentions as the Government she led earlier was removed namely by the vote of the Socialists. She noted the Socialists are not ready to support the justice sector reform and corruption fighting measures, while a government supported by the Socialists will not have the power needed to deal with people’s demands, namely to take measures to fight corruption and to reform the justice sector.

According to Maia Sandu, in the presidential elections, the vote given by the people was not only against Igor Dodon, but also against the Government and against the way in which Igor Dodon and his team manage things at the political level.

The President-elect noted that the current Government must leave. But before leaving, it must fulfill its duties, namely to present the 2021 draft state budget to Parliament for adoption. This budget should contain assistance for business entities, including for the agricultural sector, the medical system and resources for the people with small incomes, who do not have other support, and those who live below the poverty line.

Maia Sandu stated that she didn’t have discussions with incumbent President Igor Dodon before the elections and after them. She had the last discussion with him a year ago, when the Government she led was dismissed.

“Last year, the Government I led was dismissed by the parliamentary majority owing to the justice sector reforms we proposed. It was removed because the parliamentary majority was afraid of the anticorruption measures we started then. In these elections, the citizens of the Republic of Moldova gave us a powerful mandate namely for fighting corruption,” stated Maia Sandu, noting Parliament should be dissolved for forming a new legislative body and also a new Government.

Maia Sandu intends to have a meeting with Prime Minister Ion Chicu so as to see the real situation in the country and the financial situation, including from the perspective of the foreign policy she intends to implement so that she could attract foreign investment and could transmit messages in relation to the actions taken to improve the situation caused by the pandemic.
