Maia Sandu requests re-evaluation of list of candidates for position of General Prosecutor

Prime Minister Maia Sandu asked the Commission for the selection of the Prosecutor General candidate to urgently verify the information published in the press and to take into account the opportunity of re-evaluating the short list. Maia Sandu wrote on Facebook that she made the request in the context of the emergence of new information regarding the integrity of a candidate from the short list. She did not offer a name.

Maia Sandu said that she understands that the members of the Commission acted independently and that she respects the independence of the Commission, however, she assumes that the information that commission members  received regarding the integrity of some candidates from the relevant institutions could be incomplete. "We have a moral obligation towards the citizens to promote people who are not suspected of corruption", wrote Maia Sandu.

Four out of the 16 candidates who passed the first test of the competition reached the final stage. Oleg Crîșmaru, prosecutor, Vladislav Gribincea, Legal Resources Center chairman, Veaceslav Soltan, prosecutor, and Alexandr Stoianoglo, former Democrat MP and former UTA Gagauzia prosecutor, made the short list.

Previously, Veaceslav Soltan made the news. While being head of the Information Technology and Cybercrime Combating section of the General Prosecutor's Office, he allegedly managed a procurement tender for Windows operating system for the PG's computers. The version of the operating system was different than the one indicated in the specification. The total value of the auction was about 4.6 million lei, while, starting with 2017, the operating system license is extended every year.
